Peugeot 908 Hybrid4 LMP1 race car
The Peugeot 908 Hybrid4 uses hybrid diesel technology to help it not only burn cleaner, but stay on track longer than a standard LeMans entry. Like most hybrid racers, the electric motor on board the 908 uses regenerative braking to store up power for an electric motor than can be used for short squirts of 80 hp when the driver needs it.
Since the unveiling of the team’s first demonstration hybrid car at Silverstone, in 2008, Peugeot Sport has continued to work on this technology in extremely close collaboration with the Group’s engineers.
The system employed by the Peugeot 908 HYbrid4 recovers and stores the kinetic energy generated under braking, before feeding it back into the driveline during acceleration. Using this recovered energy in this way significantly improves the efficiency of the power-train.
Objective for the Peugeot 908 HYbrid4 in 2011
Following the world premiere of the Peugeot 908 HYbrid4 in its white livery at the Geneva Motor Show, Peugeot Sport will now turn its attention to meeting a target it has set for the new car.
Much to our surprise, the French automaker came to the Geneva Motor Show and unveiled another version of their new LMP1 bad boys, the 908 HYbrid4 LMP1 racer.
Measuring 4.64 meters long, 2 meters wide, and 1.030 meters high, the 908 HYbrid4 LMP1 race car shares pretty much the same design language as the 908 racer that was unveiled about a month ago. Likewise, the 908 HYbrid4 LMP1 will depart from past Peugeot LMP1 racers in that it will come with a closed-cockpit. The 908 HYbrid4 LMP1 race car is powered by a 3.7-liter V8 HDi FAP diesel engine coupled with a hybrid system. The output generated by the diesel engine hits 550 horsepower with the hybrid system contributing an extra 80 horsepower. Just like its 908 HDi FAP alter ego, the 908 HYbrid4 is expected to face a serious rival in the form of Peugeot’s Le Mans arch-nemesis, Audi. If you’re a betting man, there’s a great chance that the battle for 2011 Le Mans supremacy will boil down to these two automakers - again.
