2012 Smart Roadster
The smart roadster is coming fast and mad. Let's admit that the new roadster has a sleek fashionist design which will blend easily into the urban scenery. The new smart roadster seems to be inspired from the forspeed concept revealed at Geneva Motor Show in March, and stays true to the 2003 original model with its distinctive low profile, while featuring modern design touches such as sculpted flanks. The chunkier five-door crossover goes back to the forfour supermini that was cut from production in 2006.The model retains smart’s trademark two-tone body, highlighting the central safety cell.
Unfortunately production was scheduled for 2007, but the project was swiftly dropped
Mercedes-Benz and its small car subsidiary Smart has just filed to patent what appears to be the next Smart Roadster variant. From the double-bubble windscreeen to the ‘Tridion cell’ cabin structure and soft styling of the front end, the model certainly looks much better than the current open top Smart Crossblade. The 2012 Smart Roadster should be something to look forward to in any case, and a tasty addition to the supermini car market.
There’s no word yet on what kind of powertrain the new Roadster will carry, but judging from the rendering, the new Roadster does bear some striking similarities to the ForSpeed Concept that we saw last March at the Geneva Motor Show.
Dare we say, there might even some Mercedes, Porsche and MINI design elements added to the car’s classy yet sporty overall profile. Then again, we’re not the least bit surprised that there’s some Merc design influence on it, seeing as Mercedes’ parent company, Daimler, also owns Smart.
