Cadillac ELR electric vehicles

When it comes to electric vehicles (EV), rarely do we equate them with comfort, style, luxury or power. Instead we tend to think of EVs as fuel-savers, efficient, environmentally friendly and green, but General Motors is hoping to change that with their Cadillac ELR Coupe which they had just unveiled today.

The electric motor in the Cadillac ELR Coupe is said to have a range of 35 miles when fully charged, which does not seem like much. Alternatively you could always plug your car in any time if you wish to avoid using gasoline.

General Motors Co. (GM) said it will make a plug-in hybrid Cadillac ELR that uses technology similar to its Chevrolet Volt that went on sale last year.

GM plans to price the ELR less than the $57,400 Model S by Tesla Motor Inc.’s, said a person familiar with the plans. Chief Executive Officer Dan Akerson said in January that he wants a car using the Chevrolet’s Voltec electric-drive technology for each of GM’s four U.S. brands.

The ELR will be about the same size as the Volt, said the person familiar with the ELR plans. GM’s Volt goes 25 to 50 miles using power from a T-shaped lithium-ion battery. A gas engine extends the range to more than 340 miles when battery power is depleted.

The prices for all the Tesla models are before a $7,500 federal tax credit.
The Cadillac Converj Concept is headed to production as the Cadillac ELR.
Chief among this is the powertrain, which is expected to carry an electric propulsion system with a T-shaped lithium ion battery, an electric drive unit, and a four-cylinder engine-generator.

“The concept generated instant enthusiasm,” said Don Butler, VP of marketing for Cadillac.
“Like other milestone Cadillac models of the past, the ELR will offer something not otherwise present – the combination of electric propulsion with striking design and the fun of luxury coupe driving.”
